Uganda: Uncertain future for IDPs while peace remains elusive.
With the peace process plagued by delays and confusion, and with conditions in return areas often worse than in the IDP camps, the future for IDPs in northern
Uganda remains uncertain.
In August 2006 the government of
Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) signed a Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CHA), which led to significant improvements in the security situation in northern Uganda. After many delays, progress in the peace negotiations between the Government of Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army in early 2008 gave rise to cautious optimism that an end to the conflict in northern Uganda might finally be on the horizon after 22 years of war.

FMR Burma issue now online

The latest issue of Forced Migration Review (FMR 30) with its feature
section on ‘Burma’s displaced people’ is now online at
www.fmreview.org/burma.htm

With the ‘Saffron revolution’ of September 2007, Burma was catapulted
into the centre of international attention. It was briefly headline news
as people monitored the regime’s response and watched for hints of
progress towards democracy and the restoration of rights. With little
action on either front (and no visible resurgence of violence or
protest), interest has since waned. This issue of FMR aims to help bring
the crisis of forced displacement of Burmese people back into the
international spotlight.

The feature section on Burma includes 29 articles exploring the extent
of the displacement crisis, factors affecting displaced people and the
search for solutions. The issue also includes 19 articles on other
aspects of forced migration.

We would like to thank Inge Brees, guest editor for the Burma feature
section, and those agencies that have provided funding specifically for
this issue: DanChurchAid, DFAIT Canada, International Rescue Committee,
UK Department for International Development and ZOA Refugee Care.

This issue will be published in Burmese as well as our usual four
languages: English, Arabic, French and Spanish.

This issue will be distributed to our usual mailing list shortly. If you
usually receive FMR, you do not need to contact us unless you require
multiple copies.

If you do not usually receive FMR but would like to receive a hard copy
for your organisation, or multiple copies for distribution to partners
and policy- and decision-makers, please contact fmr@qeh.ox.ac.uk You
will need to send us your full postal address and indicate how many
copies in which language you require.

Please feel free to reproduce and circulate any articles, crediting
Forced Migration Review and citing the URL www.fmreview.org/burma.htm.

The feature themes of the next two issues of FMR in 2008 are climate
change/environmental displacement (www.fmreview.org/climatechange.htm)
and statelessness (www.fmreview.org/statelessness.htm). If you would
like to write for either, please look at the calls for articles online
and contact us as soon as possible at fmr@qeh.ox.ac.uk. Many thanks.

Apologies for any cross-posting of this message.

With best wishes

Women's Asylum News

We recently received a significant donation of back issues of the journal entitled "Women’s Asylum News." The donation consisted Issues 49 (Feb 2005) through to Issue 74 (April 2008). This donation was very kindly given to us by the Refugee Women’s Resource Project @ Asylum Aid and supplements the back issues of this journal that we already held so we now hold an almost complete run from 2002 (Issue 20) onwards.

Further details about the Refugee Women's resource Project and online copies of the journal can be found via their web site at:
